Your big day is fast approaching and you have been swamped with checking off your wedding to do list. By now you’ve already done your homework and have your eye set on your ideal makeup artist, or maybe you’re still searching for your perfect match. Whichever stage your panning process lands on at the moment, I want to provide some important wedding makeup tips that every bride needs to know before saying I do. Grab a notepad, open up your notes app or save this post cause girl, you’re gonna need this!
Have a set skincare routine
As I’ve mentioned before in my previous post, skincare is the most essential step in your beauty routine. Are you keeping up with your daily cleansing? Toning and moisturizing? By feeding your skin with all the yummy nutrients weeks and even months ahead, you’re setting yourself up for a flawless, healthy glow on your most important day. Not all skincare is created equal though. Commit to a skincare that addresses your skins’ needs and always make sure you discuss with your dermatologist or skincare expert before jumping onto any intense treatments/medications.
Treatments such as chemical peels, micro-needling, retinoids or active acid chemicals take weeks for your skin to acclimate to, thus requiring a longer down time. You’ll need to allow time to heal. Starting ahead will make sure you don’t run into any new skin irritations too close to your wedding day, affecting the overall application of your makeup.
Schedule a makeup trial
Bridal makeup previews can be the greatest investment for your wedding makeup look. Just like dinner rehearsals or final dress fittings, your makeup trial is just as important and should be a part of your checklist. I absolutely love to meet my brides before the big day and review all and any questions they may have. We have the opportunity to get to know each other and dive deep into bridal makeup ideas and inspirational photos if any. This is also a great time to experiment with different lip colors and eyeshadow looks.
From skin concerns to color selections & complexion preferences, having a trial allows you to preview your ideal look and make any changes with ample time. It can get quite hectic the morning of your wedding, and by having had a trial, your artist will recreate your trial look knowing exactly what products to use while staying on time. Best of all? You’ll be 100% confident the final look is perfect for you.
Skip the trends
Although we love some of social media’s latest makeup trends, our wedding day isn’t the ideal time to experiment with a look that might not represent the real you. Thing is, trends change and with that comes new thoughts, styles and new ideas. Yes- I totally agree that the bride has the ultimate say but I’m here to ensure I bring out the best, most absolute perfect version of yourself. Trends, as mentioned before, change overtime and quite frankly might not be the most flattering for every bride. The last thing you want is to look back at photos and say, “What the hell was I thinking!” right? The main focus here is to enhance your natural beauty (from a timeless, soft makeup application to a sexy sultry glam) while staying true to the gorgeous self your significant other fell in love with.
Have a timeline
Speaking from countless experiences, the morning of your wedding can be quite chaotic and things can easily fall behind schedule. Sticking to a glam itinerary will ensure your morning is a lot less hectic and everyone stays well on track. I always offer a customized timeline when booking parties larger than 5 guests. Having full communication with the hair stylist and wedding planner prior to the big day ensures we are all working harmoniously to get the bridal party done in a timely manner. I understand how easily things can fall behind schedule when you are not following a timeline. Having that extra time at the end for final touch-ups and pictures will make your morning that much smoother.
Consider the season
Climate can certainly ruin your bridal makeup especially if you’re not properly preparing for it. Having a full understanding of every detail of your special day will allow your artist to strategize the best possible application for you. Imagine having an outdoor wedding in the summertime, you’ve got combination/oily skin, and you aren’t prepared with a touch-up kit? Hmmm reason number 99 why having a skilled makeup artist prepping and priming your skin correctly is crucial in the glam process. By asking all the right questions, I make sure I deliver an all-day, flawless weatherproof wear that’ll surely last. It’s all about technique here.
Another thing to consider while on the topic of seasons is color selections/tones. Having a fall wedding? Play around with smokey greys, raspberry and soft ochre shades. Burnt golds, burgandy and violets also pair beautifully in this season. In contrast, a spring or summer wedding might call for a fresher colorful look such as peaches, rosy pinks and shimmering champagne tones. Remember that these are only suggestions, as the ideal bridal look is the one that looks the best on YOU.
Please, don’t forget to eat!
You have no idea how many times I have witnessed brides go on for hours without having anything to eat. This might not be a part of the makeup process, but it happens way too often and its extremely worth mentioning. Your mind might be occupied with a thousand other things the morning of your wedding. Why not assign one of your bridesmaids to bring food specially packaged for you? Having a stash with all your favorite snacks or a nutritiously packed morning meal will come in very handy. Trust me she definitely won’t mind helping any way she can. This may sound crazy but the last thing we all need is a tired, hangry, tipsy bride. Yep I know you’ll be sippin’ on those mimosas! Remember, you probably won’t have time to sit and enjoy your dinner later in the day. So please: stay energized, relax and have some food, babe.
